Stainless steel soldiers, sculpted by Frank Gaylord of Barre, Vt., and a wall designed by Louis Nelson of New York, N.Y. make up the fabulous Korean War Veterans Memorial on the Mall near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC.
Nineteen soldiers are on patrol. They depict men of an advance patrol in the rice paddies of Korea. The low juniper at the memorial sub for green rice plants. Polished granite strips sub for pathways of a Korean rice field. The advanced party is made up of 14 Army, 3 Marines, 1 Naval and 1 Air Force. The statues are, for the most part, seven feet tall. The ponchos make you imagine the feel of rain or the cold winds in Korea.
The memorial is very cool and somber. I found it interesting that although there was a large crowd, everyone seemed to speak in quiet tones. Great reverence to the men who served. It's hard to take your eyes off the soldiers.
The field of statues is about 100 yards from the Lincoln Memorial. The Washington Monument is far in the distance but quite visible. I think it is a "must see" when you visit Washington. The DC Circulator circles the Mall monuments and museums. On/off is a buck, and the buses are handicapped friendly. The Korean Memorial is handicap friendly. Restrooms are located at the base within the Lincoln Memorial.
