This portrait of the sugar cane in the field in the Rio Grande Valley has me hypnotized. I could stare at it for hours like a Rothko. The cotton candy clouds contrast with the dark rich soil. The tough sugar cane is golden at its base and green stalks and leaf reach into the air. Beneath the plants are the dark nooks where rat snakes hide in ambush for field mice that can't resist a temptation to satisfy the sweet tooth. It will lead to their death.
Workers near Rio Hondo, cut the cane (or any snakes that don't slither out of their way) and load it to trucks. A dozen trucks may be making a circle to get the cane to the factory. Loading, delivery, return, and reload, the cycle brings sweet rewards to America. It is backbreaking work. But its a job. The valley is rich with soil that will feed America.
