The Robert Gould Shaw Memorial is one of Augustus Saint-Gauden's masterpieces. It is a patinated plaster which is displayed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. The original bronze is in Boston. Saint-Gauden tweaked this version to his satisfaction in 1900.
When first viewed through the door openings of the Gallery, it looks like a mirage in the distance. Walking into the room you are inspired by its majesty. It depicts the bravery of Colonel Robert Shaw and the African-America soldiers of the 54th Massachusetts. The majority of which were killed or captured and executed in battle as depicted in the movie Glory.
