On Beacon St. in Boston stands the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial to the Massachusetts 54th Regiment. It serves as a memorial to the group of men who were among the first African Americans to fight in the Civil War.
Augustus Saint-Gauden latter tweaked a larger plaster version which is now displayed in the National Gallery of Art. It is awesome, and a must see if you visit the National Gallery in Washington.
Robert Gould Shaw Memorial
Augustus Saint-Gauden's Robert Gould Shaw Memorial in the National Gallery of Art simple left me in awe. Anyone who has seen the movie Glory is compelled to look at the shoes and boots in the artist's work. I'll never forget the scene where Denzil Washington plays the soldier who is whipped for going awol to secure shoes.
